It was in this city of Bavaria that her body was landed on March 4, 1945 after she had succumbed to typhus in a convoy of women from Ravensbrück. Having found nothing on the Internet, I promised myself to go there.

The opportunity having arisen in July 2015, I plan two days with my wife to do research in the cemeteries of Augsburg: seven municipal, one Catholic, two Protestants and two Jews. Arrived on site on the evening of July 15, we are preparing for a long day in the heat of this beautiful summer. But thanks to a series of meetings, we will succeed much more quickly than we thought.

On the instructions of the personnel of one of the first cemeteries we visited, we went to the Westfriedhof (Western cemetery) where the central administration of the municipal cemeteries is located. The man who welcomes us cannot find Lili in his file, but tells us that there are two sectors in the cemetery devoted to the world wars. We find without difficulty the one concerning the second, which brings together the graves of soldiers and victims of aerial bombardments, but no victims of the camps. I then strike up a conversation with an elderly man on a bicycle who has come to his mother's grave. He leads us to the sector of the first war and tells us that there is also a memorial of the victims of the camps, where there are Jews, which the man from the administration had not told us.

Monument in memory of the victims of the camps in Augsburg (Bavaria)

There, on either side of a monument “in memory of the 235 victims of concentration camps †1945 who rest here”, we discover about thirty engraved stone plaques scattered in the grass. Most bear crosses, only one the Star of David. On one of those bearing a cross, I discover the inscription:

STRAUSS Lilli 45 years (45 years old)

After the man had left us, we meditate for a long time in front of the plate, in this sober and calm place, a little apart.

Lilli Stauss seems to be the Lili Strausz of Dialogues with the Angel

Very quickly doubts assailed me. Is it “our” Lili or another? The spellings of the surname and first name are different, the age is wrong (Lili was only 38) and why a cross and not the Star of David as on a nearby plaque? Lili was certainly baptized in Katalin, but it was as a Jew that she was deported. What is certain, however, is that she was indeed a victim of the camps, who died in 1945 in Augsburg. Where would his memory be honored if not there?

We find answers in the afternoon at the Jewish cemetery on Haunstetterstrasse. Amongst the graves from the time of the Second World War, small plaques catch my attention: most of them bear names found in the morning at the Westfriedhof on the plaque with the Star of David! I understand then that if Lilli Strauss does not appear on the latter, it is that she was not from here. The plaque brings together members of the Jewish community of Augsburg, buried in their cemetery. I will have confirmation of this the next day at the town hall, where I find for the third time, on a plaque commemorating the murder of “Augsburg Jews”, the names found at the Westfriedhof and at the Jewish cemetery. On this plate of the town hall, there are also Strauss, but no Lilli or Lili.

I now have the intimate conviction that it is indeed "our" Lili (with a single l), which was listed by the city of Augsburg, which set up this place of remembrance in 1950 for the victims of camps from 'Augsburg or Dead in Augsburg. Moreover, on "his" plate, there are five other women. It is the only plaque that brings together so many women's names. Perhaps women from the convoy whose bodies were landed with his at Augsburg station on March 4, 1945? Eva Danos speaks of five new deaths this early morning.

Back at the hotel, I discover that everything was already on Internet : a simple question of the spelling of his first and last name made me miss it…

EL

After learning this winter that the city of Bayreuth had paid tribute to Hanna and some of her companions, I wondered whether anything had been [...].

[6

post-891","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-evenements
["GET
